1. Background

Wonderland group of schools comprise Wonderland academy—Maseno and Wonderland academy - Lela. These are the leading and fastest growing private Primary Schools in Maseno and Lela.

The school at Maseno first opened it’s doors to the public in January 2002, while the one at Lela started in 2007, both are sponsored by Wonderland Foundation , a local N.G.O which identified the need in the Maseno Community for providing competitive high quality education.

The schools have over the past years seriously embarked on bridging the gap by fulfilling it’s commitment of providing high quality learning and enabling it’s pupils to shine over others.

3. Teaching Staff

Wonderland schools actively seek the best teachers in the region and aspires to fill vacant position with superior performers who are professionally qualified and experienced.

The schools Managers/Headteachers are Mr. Moses Ochango for Maseno Campus and Mr. Davis Namuyenga for Lela Campus. There are a total of 50 Members of staff in both schools.

4. Learning Environment

One distinguishing feature about Wonderland is the emphasis on customer satisfaction. Teachers give and check class work everyday, assist weak pupils to catch up with others and keep every child highly motivated to learn.

Parents are encouraged to monitor their children's’ academic progress and often communicate with teachers on matters touching on the welfare of their children. Every pupil has a school diary for this purpose.

To keep the children attentive and cheerful throughout teaching period, nutritious and delicious snacks are provided at 10:00 a.m. and lunch at 12:30 p.m. This natures their faster mental/ intellectual growth.

5. Academic Achievement

The Maseno campus has maintained a leading position in KCPE performance in Emuhaya District and Western province at large since it started presenting candidates from 2008. So far most of its best pupils have been joining the best national and provincial secondary schools in Kenya like Alliance,Mangu,Nairobi School,Maseno School, Limuru Girls, Friends School Kamusinga, Lugulu Girls,Bunyore Girls,Moi Girls Eldoret,Kakamega High, Mukumu girls,Chavakali High ,Maranda High, Kisumu Girls, Kanga High e.t.c.

The Lela campus will be sitting for its first KCPE exams in 2012 and so far the school have shown potential to produce excellent results.

6. Transport: Shuttle Service

To cope with the increasing demand by parents over their quest for high quality education, the school introduced a shuttle van transport service that has now been boosted by a new luxurious bus purchased by parents in January 2011. This ferries pupils from various collection points before school at 7:00 a.m and drops them back after school at 5:00 p.m

Currently the school transport system covers Ojola, Daraja-Mbili, chulaimbo, Lela, Maseno Posta, Karateng, Ekwanda South, Maseno Depo, Sunrise, Ebusakami junction, Kima, Esibuye and Luanda town and is expanding every year.

This has been very convenient to both parents, students and teachers leading to the better results the school produces each year.

7. Admission (Day and Boarding)

Maseno campus has an enrolment of 400 pupils while the younger Lela campus has an enrolment of 250 pupils. There are 200 pupils boarding at Maseno Campus from class 4 to 8 (for both boys and girls).

The schools have an average of 25 pupils per class and the new enrolment is on continuous basis in all classes from Nursery-Baby class to standard 8.

8. Fee Structure

The fee structure at Wonderland is affordable given the current distribution of incomes in Kenya and is much lower than what other private schools within the region charge. It ranges between Kshs. 4000 and Kshs 6000 per term depending on the class one is enrolled in. The above fees includes exercise books, pencils, 10.00 am snacks and lunch.

9. Conclusion

As one enters the compounds of Wonderland schools, one is met with a scene of confident smiling happy children communicating in fluent English language who have only the sky as a limiting factor to their academic aspirations.

One could take pride in all that is being achieved . Hence, how travelling on a different road can make a difference when light can be seen as the end of the tunnel.
